- [S42] Philip Wayne Powell, Mexico's Miguel Caldera, 99 (: 2).
Cristobal Caldera's company suffered sizeable losses, from enemy arrow, desertions, or both. In June 1583, he was in Mexico City recuriting additional sldiery, to the number of twenty-three. Among these was a Melchor CALDERA, son of Miguel Caldera dn Juana Velazquez, residents of Valencia de Alcantara, Spain. This Melchor was forty-two years old, black bearded with some gray hair. His age, two years more than Cristobal, might make him a brother of both Cristobal and Pedro; if so, our captain Miguel Caldera could have been named for a Spanish gradfather.
